NC Pro-Life Democrats Warn that Health Care Reform May Not Pass With Taxpayer Funded Abortion

North Carolina Pro-Life Democrats support genuine health care reform that leads to affordable health insurance for the millions who cannot afford health care. As the Senate takes up debate on their bill, NCPLD strongly supports the compromise agreed to in the House through the Stupak-Pitts amendment to the House Affordable Health Care for America Act. The Stupak (D-MI) amendment to the House health care bill, which passed 240-194 with the support of 64 Democrats, extends the 33 year-old Hyde amendment that prohibits federal funding of elective abortions. The NC delegation in the House voted 8-5 to support the Stupak amendment. This reflects a November 2009 CNN poll indicating that 61% of Americans oppose federal funding of abortion, compared to 37% who favor such funding.
With the passage of the Stupak amendment, the House health care bill still only narrowly passed by a vote of 220-215. Given that 42 of the 220 representatives also favor the Stupak amendment, it should be clear that the Stupak amendment is essential to passage of a health care reform bill in the House. The Senate must now make the choice - oppose the Stupak amendment and doom health care reform or support it and assure its passage. Eleanor Clift put it best, "Women without health insurance are not looking to Congress foremost to guarantee them abortion services; they want preventive health care and prenatal coverage." NCPLD urges our two Senators, Kay Hagan and Richard Burr, to support the amendment by Senators Hatch (R-UT) and Nelson (D-NE) that mirrors the House's Stupak-Pitts amendment. The uninsured are depending on this vote.
