Last evening an astounding victory for our nation and pro-life Democrats took place.
The House of Representatives passed the Stupak-Pitts Amendment banning taxpayer funded abortion as well as passing HB
3962 that will bring dignified and affordable health care to every American. NC Pro-Life Democrats thank all 64 Democrats
who supported it: Rep. Bob Ethridge, Rep. Mike McIntyre, and Rep. Heath Shuler. Kathy Hough, Communications Director
echoed all our thoughts, "I am so very proud of our pro-life Democrats in Congress. We now have great hope for real health
care reform that is genuinely life affirming"
Sixty percent of the NC delegation voted for the Stupak Amendment reflecting the conservative values of NC and the national trend where numerous polls have indicated that over 70% of Americans do not support federally funded abortions. However, as Democrats, we know that mandating the end of abortion is not the permanent remedy for this tragedy. We must also provide resources and support for pregnant women and their families. A national healthcare program coupled with The Pregnant Women's Support Act is vital to a positive solution.
Kristen Day, National Director of Democrats for Life of America said, "…Moving forward, we encourage the Senate to see how quickly they can pass their version of the Public Option when we put health care reform before ideological fights like abortion. We stand willing to work side-by-side with the Senate leadership to craft and promote the bill if tax payer funded abortions is removed from their bill."
North Carolina Pro-Life Democrats are also committed to that goal. David Six, Treasurer of NCPLD emphasized the importance of national healthcare, "…I am satisfied that 41 of these [64] Democrats also supported the final passage of the Affordable Health Care for America Act. Considering that the final margin of victory was 3 votes, it is clear that the bill passed only with the votes of pro-life Democrats. One of the reasons for pro-life Democrats to support this bill is the provision to eliminate denial of coverage for pre-existing conditions that include pregnancy. No woman (and thus her unborn child) should be denied coverage during the crucial first nine months of the child's formation."
Stephen Lewis, Vice President of NCPLD also agrees, "National health care is the only road for a caring nation. And a caring nation will care for all its citizens including the unborn."

The money raised by the sale of the plate would help fund crisis pregnancy centers.
