NC Pro-Life Democrats Support the Presidential Veto

For immediate release

NC Pro-Life Democrats support President Bush's veto of legislation to expand federally supported embryonic stem cell research. We agree with Rep. Mike Pence, R, Ind., who said, "This is a profound moral issue. The issue is whether or not it is morally right to use the taxpayer dollars of millions of pro-life Americans who find this research morally objectionable." We applaud the 14 House Democrats and the 1 Democratic Senator who opposed the unprecedented attempt to force federal funding of embryo destruction and research.

While we respectfully note the comments of our Party Chairman Jerry Meek, we believe he has offered a false choice. His statement that embryonic cell research "offers hope for millions of Americans, including individuals who suffer from countless ailments like Multiple Sclerosis, diabetes, spinal cord injuries and Alzheimer's, and the families that love and care for them," assumes that cures and treatments for these diseases will not be available without embryonic stem cell research. (NCDP press release, July 19) This is a false choice.

The pro-life community and specifically pro-life Democrats strongly support science research and specifically stem cell research. We support all adult stem cell research. We support cord blood and placenta stem cell research. We strongly support the National Bone Marrow Registry. These sources of human stem cells have led to treatments of actual human patients for at least 72 unique human diseases and injuries. We believe the proven track record with these successes deserves our funding priorities. We also support stem cell research from the tissues of naturally miscarried fetuses and those from ectopic pregnancies. We support animal embryonic stem cell research. We support alternative methods for obtaining human pluripotent stem cells that do not require the creation and destruction of human embryos. We do not believe that human embryos are property to be donated or are raw materials for research. There are no spare embryos.

We support the Snowflake program of embryo adoption and we support technologies of egg and sperm cryopreservation to reduce the need for creation of large numbers of human embryos and their long-term cryopreservation.

In short, we will not accept an "ends justify the means" public policy that rationalizes the destruction of human life for expediency.
