Pro-life Democrats Request New Platform Language on Abortion

The Board of North Carolina Pro-Life Democrats is presenting the following language to replace the pro-abortion language that now exists on the North Carolina Democratic Party Platform:
WOMEN: We celebrate the unique contributions to society by women at all stages of life, and we support the increased study of health issues that predominantly affect women. All women should have access to prenatal and postnatal care and counseling. We believe that women deserve to have real options available if they face unplanned pregnancies. This includes the support and resources needed to overcome the challenges of pregnancy, adoption, and/or parenthood. We support laws and programs to ensure appropriate child support from non-custodial parents and strengthened protections for victims of domestic violence.
At last year's Executive Committee Meeting in Greensboro our minimal request for new language was denied. When a compromise conscience clause was presented, it also was denied. In view of the large numbers of pro-life Democrats within our party, we believe the current language is both unfair and unwise. The current language which includes, "Women: …Furthermore, abortion must be safe, legal, and accessible to all North Carolina women," does not reflect our feelings on this sensitive and important issue, nor the breadth of issues facing women of all ages.
Members of North Carolina Pro-Life Democrats plan to attend the statewide Platform and Resolutions Committee meetings to again respectfully plead for acknowledgement of our existence within our party. NC Pro-Life Democrats are no longer willing to be identified with a platform that ignores us while placating others who wish to be defined as the "party of abortion." Our Democratic Party Platform can and should reflect the Democratic Party's longstanding reputation as the defender of the powerless and advocate for the voiceless. The platform language that we are offering acknowledges and gives respect to all women within our party and is consistent with other life affirming statements made within the platform document.

Please call the speaker of the NC House, Joe Hackney, at (919) 733-3451 and the President Pro-Tempore of the NC Senate, Marc Basnight at (919) 733 6854 to ask them to allow the citizens of our state the opportunity to purchase a "Choose Life" license plate. The money raised by the sale of the plate would help fund crisis pregnancy centers.
