The Board of Directors of North Carolina Pro-Life Democrats reiterates our opposition to capital punishment, among the other important life issues of abortion and euthanasia. It is particularly important at this time for our Democratic governor to know that there is a growing opposition to our state's application of the death penalty. As NC Attorney General for eight years from 1992-2000 Gov. Easley was the prosecutor for all of the more than 200 prisoners on death row. He has approved 22 of 24 of the executions during his term as governor, so far. Yet even Gov. Easley agrees with most criminologists and police chiefs in the country that the death penalty is not a deterrent or effective in reducing homicide. It is also becoming increasingly evident that the death penalty is not equally applied. And as the state struggles with a budget that includes increased fees and taxes and a new lottery, studies are conclusive that the death penalty costs taxpayers more than a sentence of life in prison without parole. Now Gov. Easley is poised to raise the profile of North Carolina as the state to execute the 1000th human being in the U.S. This new homicide has no purpose and gains nothing for our society other than perpetuating the violence. It also earns us the distinction of a justice system that is linked to a culture of death.
