Protecting the Unborn

When I read Jameson Taylor's Jan. 24 Point of View "Fetal homicide laws protect life, choice," I was reminded of the day my pregnant wife was hit by a car on the UNC campus.
We spent that whole nerve-wracking day at UNC Hospital with our nurse-midwife making sure our unborn daughter was uninjured. We all knew our little girl was a victim in the hit-and-run, too. Thankfully, she has been a joy to us, her grandparents and great-grandparents.
It is past time to join many states in codifying what we all know intuitively: Unborn children need protection. According to the National Organization for Women, the leading cause of death for pregnant women is homicide. It seems to me that by recognizing the unborn child as a victim (perhaps even the target of violence), we can add substantial deterrence to violence against pregnant women, which our current law just does not provide. Moreover, by recognizing the unborn child, we provide some justice for the surviving family.

Please call the speaker of the NC House, Joe Hackney, at (919) 733-3451 and the President Pro-Tempore of the NC Senate, Marc Basnight at (919) 733 6854 to ask them to allow the citizens of our state the opportunity to purchase a "Choose Life" license plate. The money raised by the sale of the plate would help fund crisis pregnancy centers.
