Pro Life Democrats

Raleigh News and Observer (01.20.2008)

For a pro-life Democrat, participation in the 2008 Raleigh March for Life the weekend of Jan. 12 was as frustrating as it was exhilarating. On the one hand, we met many pro-life Democrats and well-wishers, but on the other, we came face to face with our own party's hard-to-explain positions.

When there are 100 specialized license plates in North Carolina promoting everything from the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority to NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, why has the "Choose Life" license plate been bottled up in the Transportation Committee for five years? We are one of only two states in the South that don't allow them, and that's embarrassing.

It is equally hard to explain why North Carolina is only one of 15 states that don't have an unborn victims of violence law. We have a bill, HB 263 (northcarolina.democratsforlife.org), but it is also languishing. Given the horrific murders of Jenna Nielsen and her unborn child, followed by Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach and her unborn child, isn't it time to address this by legislative means?

We're tired of defending the indefensible. Would some Democrats in the legislature put aside their partisan cement overshoes and address these two worthy pieces of legislation?

LifeNews: North Carolina Needs Unborn Victims Law...

Please call the speaker of the NC House, Joe Hackney, at (919) 733-3451 and the President Pro-Tempore of the NC Senate, Marc Basnight at (919) 733 6854 to ask them to allow the citizens of our state the opportunity to purchase a "Choose Life" license plate. The money raised by the sale of the plate would help fund crisis pregnancy centers.
