North Carolina Democrats for Life responsd to "Democrats reassess abortion issue"
The News & Observer, 12-25-04
Dear N & O,
Your December 25, 2004 article, "Democrats reassess abortion issue," indicates that the Democratic leadership is just now getting it. Recent polls indicate over 40% of Democrats self-identify as pro-life. This is despite attrition of anti-abortion Democrats. Twenty-five years ago, the Democrats held a 292-seat majority in the House with 125 pro-life Democrats.
Twelve years ago, Democrats held a 258-seat majority with about 50 pro-life Democrats. Today, we are in a shrinking minority in the House with pro-life Democrats at a smaller, but significant 35. Nevertheless, no pro-life bill could pass either house of Congress without Democrats? pro-life votes. The ban on partial-birth abortions garnered the support of 17 Democratic Senators and 64 Democratic House members.
Pro-life Democrats are also governors, state legislators, mayors, and on down the line. There is even a national organization called Democrats for Life of America (www.democratsforlife.org) with many state affiliates, including North Carolina. As the pro-choice Governor Dean suggests, being a pro-life Democrat is about much more than being anti-abortion. Many of us are very liberal.
We desire to extend human rights to millions more human beings: the unborn. We believe in helping women and families facing unplanned pregnancies. This means adequate health care, pre- and post-natal care, and flexibility for parents in the workplace. We oppose the violence of abortion, euthanasia, and the death penalty as assaults on the basic human right to life. We look forward to working with Senator Reid and other Democratic leaders who acknowledge our place within the DemocraticParty.
