North Carolina Democrats for Life responsd to "Democrats not quite united" (Under the Dome) The News & Observer, 09.15.05

Regarding your Aug. 30 Under the Dome item "Democrats not quite united":

I attended the Democratic Party's State Executive Committee meeting in Greensboro and have regularly attended such meetings and state conventions for many years. Though there was some division among delegates on the reproductive rights plank of the platform, it is to be expected on many key issues of the day, not just that one.

We spent just as much or more time on the issues of an education lottery, how best to promote and protect our families and our jobs, and various resolutions. If we Democrats were all in "lock-step" on almost every issue, we wouldn't be North Carolina Democrats -- we'd be congressional Republicans. Lively intra-party debate is not always a sign of civil war or a family feud, but of enlightened engagement on issues that matter.

This was unquestionably the best-run, most-productive, most-inclusive, least divisive and most grass-roots-oriented platform and resolutions debate ever. Not only did we actually adopt a platform in record time, we adopted more than 60 resolutions on Aug. 27 alone. That has been unheard of in previous years. Democrats considered more than 275 proposed amendments and more than 300 resolutions pre-submitted during seven regional public hearings around the state and by e-mail.

Take this from someone involved in politics a long time and who chaired all seven public hearings and the two full Platform Committee meetings: Contrary to being split, North Carolina Democrats are more united than ever.

Rockingham
