North Carolina Democrats for Life responsd to "Democrats reassess abortion issue"

Dear Editor,
Dear Editor: The December 25 article on abortion may have led readers to conclude that pro-life women Democrats are scarce in North Carolina. Not so. N.C. Democrats for life (democratsforlife.org) now has members in every part of our state.
The fact that the delegates to the Democratic Convention in Boston were twice as likely to be pro choice as their brethren back home answers the apparent disconnect between the leaders of our party and rest of us. A 2003 Zogby poll identified 43% of Democrats as believing that abortion is manslaughter.
Ms. Allen’s statement that "..a woman should have a choice of what to do with her body," would be fine if it was only her body. But there is another life involved and that life deserves protection. At one time the Democratic Party spoke for the voiceless and defended the powerless. Pro life Democrats believe that ethic should be resurrected and extended to the most defenseless and voiceless of our species, unborn human life. As pro life Democrats we are tired of being pushed to the side and marginalized within our own party for that belief.
Democrats can make a commitment to reduce and eliminate abortions because as tireless champions of social justice they understand that it isn’t enough to “outlaw” abortion without presenting real, effective and compassionate programs to help women avoid or cope with unwanted pregnancies.
A NARAL official may think " ... it's a big mistake for Democrats to think they can win politically by moving away from a pro-choice stand," but I can assure her that our party’s right to choose has become our party’s right to lose.

Please call the speaker of the NC House, Joe Hackney, at (919) 733-3451 and the President Pro-Tempore of the NC Senate, Marc Basnight at (919) 733 6854 to ask them to allow the citizens of our state the opportunity to purchase a "Choose Life" license plate. The money raised by the sale of the plate would help fund crisis pregnancy centers.
