Abortion rights not always at top of list

To The Editor: I am writing in response to the Monday writer who wrote about Eva Ritchey being both the county chairwoman of the Democratic Party and chairwoman of the North Carolina Pro-Life Democrats.
The writer declares that the right to an abortion has always been at the top of the Democratic Party's agenda for both the United States and North Carolina. I have 20 years of service to the party, and I have read many of our founders' writings. Where is it mentioned in our founders' writings that abortion rights have always been the top agenda.
Nowhere in the writings of Andrew Jackson, Grover Cleveland, Woodrow Wilson, or even FDR were abortion rights mentioned. Nor are they in the writings of Zeb Vance, Charles B. Aycock, Max Gardner, Clyde Huey or Luther Hodges.
The fact of the matter is abortion rights is a very recent movement that some elements of the party have adopted. They were first mentioned in 1972 when the party began its decline both in the state and the nation.
The writer needs both to study her history and pick a better agenda for the party.

Please call the speaker of the NC House, Joe Hackney, at (919) 733-3451 and the President Pro-Tempore of the NC Senate, Marc Basnight at (919) 733 6854 to ask them to allow the citizens of our state the opportunity to purchase a "Choose Life" license plate. The money raised by the sale of the plate would help fund crisis pregnancy centers.
