Democrats' efforts help cut abortions

Dear Editor:

It was no surprise that the letter writer of February 22 gave our community a perfect example of how to engage in courteous and respectful public discourse.

I agree that any legislation that allowed women "to endure the agony of protracted dangerous labor to deliver non-viable, even dead, fetuses" would be vicious and I would not support it. However H.R. 760 clearly includes the exception where, "necessary to save the life of a mother whose life is endangered" including a life-endangering physical condition caused by or arising from the pregnancy itself. The AMA endorsed Federal legislation to ban partial birth abortion stating that it is rarely medically indicated and "a procedure we all agree is not good medicine." (1997)

Partial birth abortion is a ghastly barbaric act that recent investigations have proved is used frequently. Ron Fitzsimmons of the National Coalition of Abortion Providers said, ?"n the vast majority of cases, the procedure is performed on a healthy mother with a healthy fetus." (NYT 3/26/97)

Democrats for Life in the party tradition of upholding the dignity of the oppressed, will continue to work with like minded Democrats to advance legislation that protects the lives of all humans, born or unborn.

Please call the speaker of the NC House, Joe Hackney, at (919) 733-3451 and the President Pro-Tempore of the NC Senate, Marc Basnight at (919) 733 6854 to ask them to allow the citizens of our state the opportunity to purchase a "Choose Life" license plate. The money raised by the sale of the plate would help fund crisis pregnancy centers.
