Democrats' efforts help cut abortions

Dear Editor: Perhaps it's time to lay another myth to rest - one that has been exploited by the Republican Party. The letter writer who wrote, "Will an apology from Tom Daschle go on record when it is finally accepted that partial birth abortion is little less than cold-blooded, premeditated murder and its blatant followers simply accessories to the same?" (TN 2/1/03) may mistakenly believe that all Democrats support a pro-choice position.

This is not true. Unlike the Republican's lockstep "sit down, say nothing and go along" method of party unity, diversity of opinion is allowed in the Democratic Party. There are many democrats like myself that are pro-life and support a child's right to choose. In fact, we are supported and encouraged by a very sincere and feisty national organization known as Democrats for Life (democratsforlife.org).

Democrats for Life along with 65 Democratic Congressmen supported the Partial Birth Abortion Ban in 2002.

If you are pro-life you do not have to be a republican. In fact, I chose to be a pro-life democrat because I value our natural world, rejoiced in a surplus, support affordable health care, and believe in the brotherhood of man.

Please call the speaker of the NC House, Joe Hackney, at (919) 733-3451 and the President Pro-Tempore of the NC Senate, Marc Basnight at (919) 733 6854 to ask them to allow the citizens of our state the opportunity to purchase a "Choose Life" license plate. The money raised by the sale of the plate would help fund crisis pregnancy centers.
