Democrats' efforts help cut abortions

Hendersonville Times News, 01-16-05

To The Editor: Yes, a pro-life Democrat could vote for John Kerry (Jan. 7). All stages of life's journey count and how we help others is central to our worth as humans.

Abortion is often an act of desperation. Democrats have been far more proactive in initiating economic and social programs that help women escape a key cause of abortion, poverty.

Dr. Glen Harold Stassen, a consistently pro-life Christian ethicist and statistician at Fuller Theological Seminary, studied abortion data from the 1990s and the Bush administration's first three years. At the end of Clinton's second term, abortions stood at a 24-year low with a decrease of 17.4 percent while at the end of Bush's third year, they had moved significantly upward.

Dr. Stassen estimated that if the trends of the 90s had continued, 52,000 fewer abortions would've been performed in 2002.

Why are precious lives being lost? Real incomes have decreased, the minimum wage is inadequate, unemployed males are less likely to marry and our social safety net is disintegrating.

Life is a continuum that starts at conception and reaches to the grave, then beyond to the Creator's plan. For that reason many of us voted for John Kerry.

Eva L. Ritchey,

Hendersonville
