Dear Editor:

In the May 13th Observer’s coverage of the Republican jihad in Waynesville against Democrat Christians, abortion was again the issue. How odd that the right to life has morphed into the right to crucify. This is especially curious when you consider that under the last Democratic president, abortions declined and the Democratic Party has historically created the social programs that help women cope with poverty and unwanted pregnancies.

So, it should come as no surprise that on April 21st, at a national press conference at the Democratic National Committee headquarters that Congressmen Time Ryan, Bart Stupak, and Lincoln Davis along with other pro life Democrats unveiled an innovative abortion reduction proposal entitled, “The 95/10 Initiative.”

Months in the planning, The 95/10 Initiative is a comprehensive proposal of 15 different policy programs that when fully funded and implemented in coordination with each other could reduce the number of abortions in America by 95% over the next 10 years. This practical policy initiative relies on empowering women, adoption reform and protecting children. The entire initiative including legislative bills can be reviewed at DemocratsForLife.org. As Kristen Day, Director of Democrats for Life pointed out, “Both pro-life and pro-choice Democrats want to reduce the number of abortions, and this initiative will help us focus on what we have in common instead of our differences on the life issue.”

Please call the speaker of the NC House, Joe Hackney, at (919) 733-3451 and the President Pro-Tempore of the NC Senate, Marc Basnight at (919) 733 6854 to ask them to allow the citizens of our state the opportunity to purchase a "Choose Life" license plate. The money raised by the sale of the plate would help fund crisis pregnancy centers.
