Real point of abortion debate obfuscated by politics

The Asheville Citizen-Times, 04-09-04

Recently I have researched a number of magazine and newspaper articles on abortion for a college project. I was amazed to find how the controversy over this issue has changed in the past years. In the beginning of the debate the question most often broached was, "Is it morally right as a civilized society to allow any woman to terminate her pregnancy?" In the years proceeding the 1973 U.S. Supreme court decision to legalize abortion in America, the debate has digressed into an argument of one's religious convictions or political party affiliation.

No longer do we argue the right or wrong of ending the life of an unborn being; instead, we can't seem to get past the other parties' religious practices or voter registration. Despite our beliefs in God or our political choices, we must as intelligent human beings ask ourselves some serious questions on this issue. All petty debate thrown aside, the laws of humanity require us to investigate this injustice, disguised as a medical procedure, and do everything in our power to end abortion. Further pointless squabbling can only prolong the process, and allow this horrible procedure to legally continue for another 30 years.
