Eva Ritchey

President

Eva Ritchey

Eva Ritchey is an environmental and transportation activist who lives in Hendersonville, N.C. In 2002 she received the Mountain Clear Air Leadership Award for her "vision and leadership in supporting passage of the North Carolina Clean Smokestacks Act."

Ritchey is most proud of the honor her peers gave her in 2000 and 2001 naming her the Henderson County Council For Women's "Women of Distinction" for two consecutive years. In 2000 she received the North Carolinians Against Gun Violence's Citizen of the Year Award.

In her words: "While I shared many of the values of the Democratic Party, I was a life long Independent voter because of my strong belief in the sanctity of all life. In 2002, I came in contact with Democrats for Life of America and 'finally found a home.'

"In 2003 I began organizing in North Carolina with the assistance of Cayce Utley and Kathy Hough. A state chapter, N.C. Pro-Life Democrats was established in 2005. I know there are thousands of pro life Democrats in North Carolina who want respect for the sanctity of all life returned to our party and thousands of Democrats who left our party over this issue who just want to come home."

Christa Carter

Secretary

Christa Carter

Christa Carter is secretary of North Carolina Pro-Life Democrats. She is a student at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and hopes to pursue a career in social work, where she can help fight the social problems that lead to abortion.

Carter is consistently pro-life in her views, opposing abortion, the death penalty, and euthanasia.

A feminist, she wholeheartedly supports the Democratic Party's platform to fight poverty, racism, and discrimination in America.

In her words: "Abortion has been the downfall of not only the Democratic Party, but also the feminist movement. As a woman, I feel that raising a child is not solely my responsibility but also the responsibility of a father. The pro-choice movement merely affirms the stereotype that child-rearing is solely the responsibility of the mother. As Democrats strive for equal rights for women, legalized abortion hinders our progress."

Christa Carter,

Chapel Hill, N.C.

Six earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his master's degree and Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of California-San Diego. He is active in People of Faith Against the Death Penalty and the Respect Life Committee at his Catholic parish. He serves on the N.C. Democratic Party's Committee on Faith and Values. He lives in Durham, N.C., with his wife and daughter.

In his words: "This is an historic opportunity to bring together Pro-Life Democrats and Pro-Life former Democrats who share our Party's dedication to human rights and the protection of the powerless and defenseless in our society. We will now be able to add our voices together to support pregnant and parenting women, to enhance the dignity of the dying and disabled, to reform our criminal justice system to safeguard the innocent and be fair and equitable to the poor — to recognize the intrinsic worth of all human beings from conception until a natural death."

Kathy Hough

Board member

Kathy Hough

Kathy Hough is a native North Carolinian. She graduated from UNC-Greensboro and is now an underwriter for a large insurance company. She is single and lives in Charlotte with her two dogs.

Although she has always been a registered Democrat, Hough has never been involved in politics before except to vote. She first heard of Democrats for Life of America when she read a letter to the editor by Casey Uttley in the Charlotte Observer and contacted Uttley who put her in touch with Ritchey.

In her words: "I oppose abortion for the same reason I'm a Democrat. It's the Democratic Party that tries to stand up for the most vulnerable among us. I see this as a human rights issue. I don't oppose abortion because I especially care for children; I feel protective toward anyone who is vulnerable."
