"Choose Life NC" Plates Available

Pro-life motorists in North Carolina can finally apply for a "Choose Life" specialty license plate to support the work of pregnancy resource centers throughout the state. With the passage of HB 28 in June, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) must receive 300 applications for the plate before it will print them for use on North Carolina vehicles.

The application form for the "Choose Life" plate is available here for download. Persons who wish to apply for the "Choose Life" plate must fill out the application form and return it along with the applicable fee ($25 for a regular DMV-issued "Choose Life" plate or $55 for a four-character personalized "Choose Life" plate) to the Carolina Pregnancy Care Fellowship (CPCF) at P.O. Box 3888, Charlotte, NC 28278. The DMV requires a third party-in this case the CPCF-to collect the initial 300 applications and fees. Once the CPCF submits all the applications to DMV, the plates will be made and sent to applicants. After the 300 threshold has been met, new applications for the "Choose Life" plate should be directed to the DMV directly. We are the 26th state to approve a "Choose Life" plate. Pro-Life Democrats can be proud of the part we played in making this license plate available.

The specialty license plate would cost drivers that opt to purchase the plate an extra $25 per year for the DMV issued "Choose Life" plate or an extra $55 per year for a personalized "Choose Life" plate. This fee is in addition to the regular DMV vehicle registration fee. Of the additional $25, $15 goes to the CPCF, a nonprofit group that will distribute the funds to the state's Pregnancy Resource Centers (PRCs). PRCs are non-profit, pro-life organizations located around the state that provide compassionate alternatives to abortion and help for women facing unplanned pregnancies, including counseling and other free-of-charge services.

Woman's Right to Know HB 854

NC Pro-Life Democrats urge Democratic legislators to support HB 854. Twenty four Democratic legislators since 1997 have supported a Woman's Right to Know bill including former Speaker of the House Liston Ramsey and Hugh Holliman, past Majority Leader. These Democrats were not lone rangers but represented the heart of our party and its original charter to defend life and liberty-everybody's life and everybody's liberty.

This bill is good for women because:

  1. It will provide free and voluntary materials to help them make the wisest decision. Right now a woman seeking an abortion may or may not know all the facts.
  2. Provide the locations of facilities that provide free pregnancy support services.
  3. Initiate a 24 hour waiting period--just 24 hours to have time to reason and consider. When you are desperate, your emotions carry you to a decision.
  4. The right to an abortion in a medical emergency. A woman will not be forced to die because of this bill.
  5. To know whether the abortionist has liability insurance or hospital admitting privileges. They all don't. How many women even think to ask this?
  6. That medical assistance is available to them and that the father will be required to help them as a responsible party.
  7. A free ultrasound so that a woman can know where in the developmental stage her child is. This information is critical for her in order to make the best decision.
This is a woman's bill. We need Democratic legislators to support it.

An excellent opinion piece on this legislation was written by Traci Griggs, Creative Team Leader Baptist State Convention of NC: Read More...

Perdue Signs Fetus Protection Law, Recognizing Rights of Unborn

On Friday April 29th, Governor Perdue signed the Unborn Victims of Violence Bill, Ethen's Law, into law. Every Pro-Life Democrat shares in this victory. Eleven Democrats voted for this bill assuring a veto proof majority. We have made a lot of strides over the years and this is a sweet victory. The unborn deserve all the protections our legal system accords any life. Thanks also to Board Members Kathy Hough and Stephen Lewis and Past Board Member David Six who have stayed the course for a long time. Read More...

What the Elections Results Mean to NC Pro-Life Dems

"North Carolina Pro-Life Democrats do not take pleasure in the election results for our party. We will continue to point out to our party that voters of conscience will not support candidates who are pro-choice. The abortion issue goes to the heart of values voters. The nation has left the pro-abortion position but sadly our party has not. The Democratic Party's failure to find even the smallest area of common ground with pro-life voters in our state has resulted in this defeat."

Passage of Health Care Bill Applauded by NC Pro-Life Democrats

The Board of NC Pro Life Democrats releases the following statement:

North Carolina Pro-Life Democrats applauds the passage of National Health Care. We enthusiastically commend Rep. Bart Stupak and other pro-life Democrats who refused to be intimidated and persisted in standing up for life until they prevailed. Without Rep. Stupak and his faithful eight, abortion would have been a dead subject for a decade. His actions forced the Democratic leadership to acknowledge the centrality of the abortion issue in our country. We appreciate that President Obama agreed to an Executive Order precluding abortion funding. NC Pro-Life Democrats can now celebrate this bill for the compassion it will extend to both the 35 million uninsured and the unborn waiting to share America's promise. Extending health insurance to more people brings us closer to the day when women and girls will no longer feel forced into abortion by a lack of access to health care for themselves and their children.

"...We have a simple solution. Everyone gets covered. Nobody gets deliberately killed."

Richard Doerflinger--speaking for the USCCB

"I believe in the sanctity of life,...Because it may not be convenient, do you take a life? That's not the standard of a moral society."

Rep. Bart Stupak, March 11, 2008, AP

North Carolina Choose Life Plate Backers Unveil New Design, May Sue if State Denies Tag Again

News Coverage of the Press Conference:

Tuesday, April 14, 2009
WRAL-TV | Citizen Times | Life News

This is the newly designed NC Choose Life License Plate. You cannot purchase one yet because the NC Choose Life License Plate is blockaded in the Rules Committee of our Legislature. It has been in the Legislature for 8 years. There are more than 130 approved license plates in North Carolina. The sale of each Choose Life plate will give $15 to pregnancy care centers. Last year, the 85 pregnancy care centers served over 46,000 women and men in North Carolina at no taxpayer expense. Please write a respectful email to Speaker Joe Hackney, Joe.Hackney@ncleg.net and to Rules Committee Chairman Bill Owens, Bill.Owens@ncleg.net with a copy to Senate President Pro Tempore Marc Basnight, Marc.Basnight@ncleg.net and ask them to quit suppressing HB168 and give us a democratic vote.

It's Time to Choose Life

The Democratic Party's strong commitment to human rights leads naturally to a pro-life position. Just as we care about the welfare of children, the disabled, and the elderly, we care about unborn children and their mothers. The Democratic Party was for years the defender of the powerless and spoke for the voiceless. Democrats work to find lasting solutions for women and families who face the choice of abortion because often that choice comes from desperation. As supporters of the party of tolerance and free speech, we are confident that our pro-life voice within the party will be respected. As pro-life Democrats who care about our party, we choose to work within the party to foster respect for all human life, from beginning of life to natural death. This includes, but is not limited to, opposition to abortion, capital punishment, and euthanasia. You can be pro-life and a Democrat. In fact, it is essential to the pro-life movement and to the Democratic Party that Democrats who are pro-life stay in the party and make their voices heard. We hope you will join us.
